Having done a bit of research it seems that the Sofitel has the best offering. Even though we'll be dining there tomorrow what swayed us was their more traditional take on the afternoon tea and that they serve the Wentworth Cheesecake using the original recipe which dates from the hotels opening in 1966.
Afternoon tea is generally served in the Sofitel Lounge though you might find yourself, depending on numbers, taking tea in the Garden Court Restaurant.
There are two options for tea - $49 or $59, the latter includes glasses of Champagne.
Tea is from Ronnefeldt and you can peruse the offerings via this wooden menu
in each window you can see what the tea looks like and there's a description beside it.
That's enough of the fluff onto the more important things -
A three tiered silver server filled with all manner of deliciousness.
On the bottom layer are the savoury items:
Smoked salmon, horse radish cream, tiny capers on brioche - Cucumber, dill and sour cream Finger Sandwich - Double Brie, quince and wild rocket on baguette - Mini Quiche Lorraine - Chicken and Mayonnaise Finger Sandwich
The middle layer:
Plain and Fruit Scones served with Jam and thick Cream
On the top layer are the all important cakes:
Wentworth Cheesecake described as "A light joconde pastry, layered with cream cheese and finished with seasonal berries". Light would be the adjective I'd use to describe the complete item, the cream cheese filling is so fluffy and light it's incredible.
Financier - mini hazelnut cake topped with coffee butter icing. Don't be fooled by the simple description, this just might have been my favourite item.
Lemon Curd Tart - filled with an almond and lemon cream and topped with lemon meringue
Raspberry Macaroon filled with a fresh raspberry cream - there's actually real raspberries sandwiched along with the raspberry cream.
Gateau Opéra described as "chocolate pastry with layers of almond biscuit, chocolate ganache and coffee butter cream"
Chocolate Cadeau is a "rich dark chocolate mousse filled with praline and topped with macerated strawberries" housed in a fine chocolate case
Framboisier is a genoise sponge topped with raspberry mousse, raspberry jelly and fresh raspberries.
If you are looking at this and thinking you can't enjoy it because you are gluten intolerant, have no fear, they also offer a gluten free menu!
