Lunch @ Maze

There's been quite a few changes in the personnel at Maze and Maze Grill - the question in these cases is how is the food fairing? Only way to tell, is to go out and try it.

We're opted for the degustation which begins as always with this:

Maze© by Haalo

Marinated beetroot with goat's curd, Cabernet Sauvignon vinaigrette, toasted pine nuts

Still as good as the first time - it's a classic combination done with skill.

Tuna Tartare, enoki mushrooms, radish, orange

There's a lovely subtle thread of orange that runs through this dish, first as an aroma and secondly as a flavour. If you like raw tuna, you'll love this - good sized pieces of tuna, large enough so you can appreciate its texture.

Pan seared scallops, caramelised kelp, mussels, champagne

A dish we've had a few times before but remains a favourite. Perfectly cooked scallops, still lovely and translucent on the inside.

Crispy roast pork belly, cavolo nero, soybeans, dashi

The dashi broth is poured at the table and is a brilliant match to the tender pork belly.

Duck breast, corn, cherries

Cherries form the base of the sauce as well as appear in a macerated form. Beautifully cooked duck breast, crisp skin, pink flesh. The corn puree is divine, incredibly smooth and the corn flavour amplified.

Sheeps yoghurt mousse, frozen blackberry, honey oat crumble, walnut ice cream

I suppose this might be a bit like a deconstructed cheesecake - good crunch from the crumble, a silken mousse with a slight tang from the sheeps milk. The walnut ice-cream is exactly what it says.

Madagascan Chocolate "jaffa" with bayleaf sherbet,  mandarin marmalade,  freeze dried mandarin and black rice

This is like the ultimate Jaffa flavoured dessert. Those pieces that look like honeycomb are actually freeze-dried mandarin, quite amazing to taste, the mandarin flavour is intense.

From our experience today, there may be changes, but the food is still as good as it was.
