We've arrived in Varenna a full month earlier than our previous visit - in that trip we left with it snowing! It certainly will be interesting to compare the visits. In the end of the November, not much is open as the town almost closes down, the hotel we're staying doesn't usually reopen until April though next year they will reopen at the beginning of March.
We're staying in the same room which has a large balcony and overlooks the lake - you can't get much closer.
Unfortunately, for the moment at least the view isn't the greatest but it will improve.
For dinner we ate at the hotel's restaurant.
It's a simple menu with 2 options for the entrée and main, there's also a cheese course and dessert on offer.
Paalo starts with the Carpaccio of Smoked Ostrich with basil and pinenuts
while I have the Potato and Porcini Soup, that is sprinkled generously with cheese. A most hearty serve indeed.
For main Paalo had the seared tuna with Taleggio Risotto
and I had the perfectly eggy Spaghetti Carbonara
It was all washed down with an excellent local wine - a bottle of La Prudenze Valtellina.
