Turin - Day 2

The day begins with a work related sms at 4.13am. Paalo is still a bit off colour but he has improved. After dealing with the drama we attempt to get a little more sleep before eventually heading down for breakfast at 8am.

Unfortunately Paalo's improvement lasts until he has his first bite of breakfast. So it's back to bed for him and I'm left to explore Turin alone.

A stroll down Via Garabaldi leads me straight to my first stop - Palazzo Madama.

Last time I was here Palazzo Madama was closed for renovation, like just about everything at the time.

What you must see at least is the grand staircase and it's free to view

Photos don't really do it justice.

This is at the top level of the staircase.

Besides the staircase you'll find housed here the Museo Civico d'Arte Antica di Torino - one of the best parts is that you get to see the magnificent rooms of the Palazzo.

One thing that came as a surprise is that you can catch an elevator up one of the towers and catch views of the city - I wish I knew that before I climbed all those stairs!

I'm in a tower that looks just like that one.

You can find all the photos at my Flickr set: Palazzo Madama

Just across the way is the magnificient Palazzo Reale - it was good to see that the restoration of the gate is finally finished.

From here it's a quick hop to the largest market in Europe, located in Piazza della Repubbica.

Finally it was time to head back to the room to check on Paalo. Since he still wasn't the best I went out and lunched alone at a nearby restaurant.

The place is called Mica Male and I had their lunch special

There's always bread - an assortment of grissini, plain and olive bread

Skewers of Pork (sausage, bacon, pork meat) served with Saffron Risotto and Mixed Vegetables and served with a bottle of mineral water

All that for just €6.

Since lunch was so good Paalo decided to try it for dinner.

We started with brushette - one culatello, one tomato

There's the bread again

An unusual presentation of gnocchi with vegetables. The gnocchi were great, very small and tasted of potato. Unfortunately by this stage Paalo was not feeling very well and hardly ate a thing.

The situation didn't improve when the main came out - a thin slice of grilled beef served with tomato and argula. We cut the evening short and headed back to the hotel.

  2. Hope Paalo is better by now. Better take advantage of the beautiful days in Turin before heading back home. Have fun Haalo. The largest market in Europe? I wish I was there.
